Kate Hartley
Original "Pear Portrait" Watercolor Paintings
Please scroll down the page for North Creek Mosaic Project updates!

Kate Hartley is an award-winning watercolor painter, and a teacher of visual arts. She specializes in vibrant, realistic, (and often amusing) still life works.

For many years, Kate has returned again and again to a series of "Pear Portraits"... the figurative fruit forms "posed" as if they were interacting. The resulting paintings can be enjoyed on many levels! Check out the titles accompanying each work in the gallery and print/card pages.

"As an artist, I enjoy finding 'characters' in the natural world. Pears, stones, trees and flowers seem to me to be imbued with personalities. In my still life arrangements and landscapes, I hope to depict relationships and situations, while conveying a sense of visual poetry - that of daylight embracing organic forms."

Kate can create the perfect piece for any purpose, including:

  • Artistic pieces to decorate your home, office, or place of business
  • Prints and card sets
  • Pear Portraits... of you!
  • Book illustrations
About the Artist:
Kate Hartley currently lives, paints and teaches in the southern Adirondacks, in the small mountain hamlet of North River. Her family - sons aged 8 and 12, and 16-year-old step daughter - love being so close to skiing in the winter, and to the whitewater section of the Hudson River the rest of the year! Husband, Marko Schmale, manages a busy adventure rafting center - check out whitewaterchallengers.com !

In this part of the world, inspiration is never far away... the next bend in the road may surprise one with a vista of high peaks, or an intimate scene of pines reaching over a misty beaver pond...
After more than 20 years in the Burlington, VT art scene - where Kate ran Artspace, a small art school, for many years - adjusting to life in a wilderness setting has been challenging, but always interesting.
She exhibits locally, and teaches classes for all ages, and summer camps for local children and teens. See the Exhibits and Classes page for current news and offerings.

The North Creek Mosaic Project
In the fall of 2010, Kate decided to seek funding for a huge mural, to beautify a retaining wall in "downtown" North Creek, NY. The project is well underway, thanks to sponsor organization - Johnsburg Fine Arts Group!
The mural depicts a river scene, on an ideal spring day - when rafters are already enjoying our whitewater, and skiers and snowboarders are still on the distant slopes.
On the left is the mural, grouted and "put to bed" for the winter. We'll hold classes Jan. to March 2012, and finish the first wall as soon as the snow melts... and begin the next panel, featuring skiing, fishing and kayaking.
Thanks to the Johnsburg Bed Tax Committee, ADK Arts-in-Ed, Rivendell Foundation, Whitewater Challengers, LARAC/NYSCA, and MANY adults and children who have lent a helping hand creating waves, creatures and plants for this ambitious project!
The plan for the 2011 panel of the North Creek Mosaic Project.
